Steel Pan Lessons
Steel Pan Lessons in Denver, CO
Steel pan lessons are now available in-person in Denver, CO. This instrument offers a unique opportunity to participate in a fun musical activity while learning about a cultural phenomenon from the island of Trinidad.
Lessons are ideal for musical beginners. The steel pan is traditionally taught by rote, the art of mechanical repetition and methods of digesting the material without sheet music. Rote teaching is valuable for people that are new to music because it removes all the prohibitive musical terminology. The student simply has to know the letters A-G and they’re off and running. The option is available for any student to choose to use notated music as well if it better fits their learning style.
Lessons can be taught to students as young as age 6 and as old as age 96. This is the perfect instrument for beginners, as the steel pan has a strong visual element to the learning process that adds to the experience. This instruction is especially valuable in-person because of how much teaching can be done simply by watching somebody else play the instrument.
The steel pan is extremely versatile and has a way of communicating multiple musical styles effectively. Calypso and Soca are 2 styles of music that emerged from Trinidad & Tobago and they are commonly associated with the steel pan as a result. But the spectrum of music expressed by pan includes reggae, ska, jazz, samba, bossa nova, cha cha, and pop music from all eras. Pan lessons inevitably include information about the islands of Trinidad & Tobago and how the steel pan was created. This only adds to the richness of the experience, especially when taken a step further and related to the history of the Americas, and of music in general.
Lesson availability is open from our PA studios in Central Denver and we are planning to open up a location soon in Littleton, CO. Stay tuned for updates!
